Abstract

The article examines the impact of postmodern thought on the ways in which religion, theology, and contemporary culture have reconfigured their relationship with truth, authority, and meaning. Drawing on the contributions of Jean-François Lyotard, Jacques Derrida, and Gianni Vattimo, the study highlights the shift from grand explanatory systems claiming universal validity toward plural, contextual, and hermeneutical forms of thought. In Lyotard's work, the emphasis falls on the crisis of metanarratives and the loss of legitimacy of totalizing discourses, including religious ones, within a society characterized by pluralism and fragmentation. Derrida introduces the perspective of deconstruction, according to which meaning can no longer be regarded as stable, definitive, or fully accessible, but rather as the outcome of an ongoing process of interpretation, difference, and deferral. This perspective has significant implications for the reading of sacred texts, which are no longer reduced to fixed messages but are understood as open symbolic spaces.Gianni Vattimo, in turn, proposes a reinterpretation of Christianity through the concept of weak thought, arguing that the weakening of metaphysics should not be understood as a rejection of faith but as an opportunity to liberate it from authoritarianism, doctrinal rigidity, and symbolic violence. Overall, the article contends that postmodernism does not negate religion; rather, it compels it to reformulate its discourse in terms of dialogue, epistemic humility, interpretative responsibility, and openness to otherness. Consequently, faith becomes less a structure of domination over meaning and more a living practice of searching, encounter, and spiritual transformation.
